DISCONTINUED SETS

While the PLAYMOBIL® novelties are drawing a lot of attention, there are also a few dozen sets that are leaving the assortment on a much quieter note. These 'discontinued' sets are taken out of production to make room for product updates or new themes. Most of the discontinued sets get a replacement of some sort, but there are others which will disappear for good.  This year, there are even 2 complete themes that get axed: the Western and the Space themes.

OF OLD AND NEW...

The discontinuation of the entire PLAYMOBIL® Western product line sure has come as a disappointment for the many collectors that had hoped to at least see an update of their favorite theme.

The Western theme was one of the initial 3 themes at the time of PLAYMOBIL®s launch in 1974, and it has been in production continuously ever since. In its glory days, the complete Western theme spanned six pages of the large edition PLAYMOBIL® catalog, totaling more than 50 sets. In recent years, the theme's size fell back to less than a dozen sets.

Cowboys and Indians are of course much less popular than they were in the mid seventies. At that time there was still a lot of interest for life in the old West as illustrated by the success of the many television shows that took their inspiration from the days of the American colonization.
