Collectobil - Novelties January 2002 - Vikings

Since the late seventies, a Viking theme was frequently requested by children and parents who wrote in to PLAYMOBIL®s customer departments. Still, they had to wait until 2002 for their wish to come true.

In the past three decades, PLAYMOBIL® must have received hundreds if not thousands of letters that contained ideas and hints for a PLAYMOBIL® Viking theme. Some fans even sent in detailed drawings and complete descriptions of how such a theme might be put together, like the fabulous artwork that was recently submitted to PLAYMOBIL® by the Dutch comic artist Mark Hendriks.

The large interest for the Viking (4519) and Northern Warrior (4540) Special figures was enough additional proof that there was a market for another big historical theme next to the Knights and Pirates. So with all these signs, the PLAYMOBIL® R&D team started initial development on a Viking theme some 3 years ago.

It is the first time in PLAYMOBIL®s 28 year long history, that a few smaller sets of a mayor new theme are introduced in January. This will be months before the themes actual corner stone sets like the Viking Long Boat (3150) and the Viking Fortress (3151) will make their debut on the market as regular Fall Novelties.

The most impressive creation among these first four Viking sets is without a doubt the "Nessie" Sea Creature (3155) which clearly borrowed its name from the legendary Monster of Lochness. The creatures body is a complex combination of a soft rubber like material and a harder ABS type of plastic. "Nessie" can turn its head and move its fins. A fearless Viking Warrior is also included to take on the Mythical Beast.

While history books usually depict the Viking warriors in brown, gray and dark shades, the PLAYMOBIL® Vikings are executed in very bright and vivid colors. The colors of the pants in the Viking Shelter (3157) set are even a little over the top.

The January 2002 Viking novelties mark another milestone for Playmobil® because they are the first PLAYMOBIL® sets that appear in the new - 6th generation - packaging design.
